The Electric Reef 2-1/2"
The Object This Kevin O'Grady Vortex is a masterwork of texture, resembling a living, organic structure frozen in glass.
The upper hemisphere is dominated by a stunning "electric webbing" effect, intricate, neuron-like strands of teal and cyan dichroic glass that crisscross over a deep black void. This chaotic, biological texture crashes into sweeping currents of molten gold and bronze ribs that flow smoothly down into the vortex mouth.
The contrast between the jagged, webbed "reef" texture and the smooth, flowing "tides" of gold creates a dynamic tension. It feels like a breaking wave or a bioluminescent deep-sea formation. The optical depth is extreme, with the "ribs" of color appearing to plunge miles deep into the center.
The Artist Kevin O'Grady (Roswell, NM) is widely recognized as the "Father of the Vortex." Since 1993, he has pushed the boundaries of the medium, developing proprietary techniques to create marbles with "impossible" depth. His work is held in major museum collections and is prized for its clean optical termination and heavy use of precious metals.
